You’re an average artist - he said. You think too highly of yourself. Words pierced sharply through my heart.
You do understand this sentence will push me into a black hole - I asked. You do realise it will take hours, if not days, to feel good again.
I put the phone down. Sat, rolled a cigarette. Wrote a poem describing the depth of my misery. Then a thought helped me: Who is the authority on what makes good art? Who is in charge of opinions? Do you decide? No.
I went to pee then. An intense feeling rose inside of me: I want to paint. But, I want to explore, I want to do bad art. No rules. Just me, the canvas and the color. Whatever it brings.
This auto portrait is the first painting I am ever putting to sale. Attaching a dollar, euro price tag to it. Claiming bad art as life. Because it makes me feel good. Because it makes me feel free. Expansive. Alive. Hopeful that life makes sense. That the battles we go through in the end reach a point where we put them into one medal that we wear on our chest, claiming: I survived. I thrived. I learned. I’m alive. After that, I entered the process I now call: Bad art. I even made a slogan: Bad art for good people. I thanked, in the end, in my heart, in the deep core, for the words I was given. They made me expand. I would also like to extend gratitude to my Angels who guarded me through feeling the liberation in the critique. Thank you.
